Vintage Railroads of Minnesota’s Iron Ore Country: The Films of George Niles and Fred Crissey
In this video, C. Vision Productions presents the classic films of George Niles and Fred Crissey captured in Minnesota’s Iron Ore Country from the 1950s to the 1970s. Beginning with the Northern Pacific, we’ll see several movements in Duluth before we shift our focus to the Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range. George documented a good variety of DM&IR steam and diesel operations in the late 1950s, with coverage of many interesting locations across the system. Mighty Yellowstones, SD9s, SW9s, and various other steam and diesel locomotives are featured. We even see one of DM&IR’s “Jitney” cars transporting company personnel around Proctor. We’ll also cover several smaller operations in the region, including Hanna Mining, Oliver Iron Mining, Mesaba Cliffs Mining, Duluth & Northeastern, and Balkan Mining. As an added bonus, the video concludes with scenes of the DM&IR, Reserve Mining, Erie Mining, and Burlington Northern in the late 1970s, from the camera of cinematographer Fred Crissey. Vintage steam, diesel, and even electric operations are all here for you in this C. Vision video presentation.

The Milwaukee Road in Montana - FULL VIDEO
Would enhance the quality of the film if it was processed through a de-shaker program but I don’t know how much time it would take to do that and how expensive it would be. It’s really odd that Lombard Montana is no more than some building footings, it’s essentially gone. Would be an interesting tourist town if it was rebuilt,,,, I’m sure that would take millions of dollars.
The first scene is Amozoc?
Is your video "Rails Along the Rolling Prairie" gonna go up on UA-cam at some point? That is one I think people would like to see
From the 1970s I’m guessing 🤔
Dan , I dont know how you find these obscure Railroads, but youve done it again .😅
Love the video! Long live CNW! My hometown and favorite railroad!
As of 2024 the enitre line has been fixed up from paris to Maysville
How can such a long train fit on such a short-line
That's a good story!
These go through colfax Wisconsin everyday
Today that line that flies over the BNSF Railroad line in Morrill, Nebraska is owned by Union Pacific Railroad. That particular flyover has also been updated and is now a double track.
You see a lot of other train loads coming through that weren't seen in the nineties. There is also a double track up Angora Hill now.
No way it's the origin of the Milwaukee road meme
I liked the white/red KCS paint scheme.
Came for the memes, stayed for the interesting information
Ha! Thanks. There’s plenty more where that came from.
Dieselized street car to shuttle employees. You gotta love that sort of creative thinking. I've often said that, if you look around long enough, you can find a railroad prototype for just just about anything.
Yes, it was quite the creative repurposing for that streetcar. The DM&IR was always known for being an efficient and resourceful railroad. We have to wonder where this idea came from. Perhaps similar personnel shuttles were in use up at the mines? Thank you for the comment.
@@CVisionProductions1 Someone had to think of it first, may as well have been them.
Minute 40:16 they unload boxes with sign "Fragil" Fragile jajaja
Haha, yes! We noticed that as well. Those boxes were really flying! They were probably trying to expedite the station stop, especially after being delayed by the freight train. We appreciate the comment.
Magic México! No protection gear, safety rules? Kids everywhere! But believe this is one of the best videos. Congratulations and thanks
We very much appreciate your kind words. And yes, it was a different era. But everyone looked happy and seemed to enjoy the trains, even the railroaders themselves - and that’s saying a lot! Thank you for taking the time to watch this video and share your thoughts.
Great memories 📸👍🏼🚂🔝✔️🫶🏼
Thank you!!! We’re happy that you enjoyed this look back in time.
Thank you for posting another classic video!❤
You’re very welcome! Thank you for taking the time to watch.
Amazing gems in the Missabe Range of Minnesota!
Thank you, MJ!!! We’re glad that you appreciate the video.
I live by the Saluda river.
Very cool! That are is quite beautiful. Thank you for watching the video.
Amazing video! Love that coverage of the D&NE in Cloquet and Saginaw too! Sure has changed since then!
Thank you very much!!! And yes, the D&NE had a fascinating little operation. We’re grateful that Mr. Niles had the foresight to capture it before everything changed. We appreciate the comment.
@@CVisionProductions1 thanks! Have you guys ever considered revisiting the lakes sub?
We did a few years ago, and that video is on UA-cam, but you probably already know that.
@@CVisionProductions1 yea I saw that one . Pretty awesome , what about like a 2024 revisit or something like that
We won’t rule it out! Thanks again for the suggestion. Most of the videos in line for the rest of the year will feature older footage.
Thanks for another DM&IR video!
You’re very welcome!!! Thank you for watching it!
Great video!
Thank you, Paul! Much appreciated.
great old school video again
Thank you, Kelvin!!! We’re glad that you enjoyed the video.
Excellent video! Grew up in Minnesota photographing and modeling the Soo Line in the 80s and 90s. Sure is nice seeing trains a reasonable length instead of the 2 mile long PSR monsters we have now.
Thank you Andy! Glad you enjoyed it. Those were the best days on the railroad.

Everyone’s favorite fallen flag!
sad that the entire route down Provo canyon to connect to UP main line in Pprovo is not been restored yet...
It would be pretty darn awesome if that could happen, but it’s probably not possible at this point. If you’ve heard anything to the contrary, we’d love to know! What a cool route that would be… Thank you for the comment.
Awesome video! Yall shpuld definitely make a trip up north in utah and check out the malad local! Definitely a great line to document! If you need anyhelp knowing the schedule i know it by heart from growing up next to it!
Thank you!!! And yes, the Malad branch would be something worth covering. We appreciate the idea, and also the offer for assistance.

La corrupción e ineficiencia del gobierno federal ocasionó el colapso del sistema ferroviario del país en 1996,,, Ferrocarriles Nacionales de México llegó a su fin,,, privatizandolo y desapareciendo el servicio de pasajeros.....

Ok, sounds good. Thanks.
Really great stuff. Thanks for sharing
Thank you!!! And you’re very welcome. It’s our pleasure to share these videos with you. We appreciate the comment.
The good ol days
They absolutely were! Thank you.
0:37 In late 2006, the Indiana Harbor Belt roadbed in Franklin Park, a suburban community of Chicago, Illinois, was consolidated with the Canadian National's at Junction B-12.
Sounds like a Nathan M3. Very awesome horn! (1st train)
Nailed it! It sounded pretty darn good if you ask us. Thank you for pointing it out.
The Dolly 416 looking janky and rough running. The Dolly’s broke down a lot
That sounds about right. And it was interesting that 416 was paired up with 2554. Perhaps the 415 was down for maintenance? We appreciate you noting the 416’s presence in the video.
Awesome
Thank you very much!!! We’re glad that you enjoyed the video.
I ran both those units when they were B&M 1726 and 1738 before they were painted like this. Pan AM did "rebuild" them long ago but when I ran them they were getting tired and they both were throwing oil out the exhaust stacks. The 52 (ex 1726) has been painted a D&RGW style paint scheme and now is numbered 5926. The 77 (ex 1738) status is unknown by me. Thank you for sharing this video!!
You’re very welcome! Thank you for sharing that information about the Heber Valley’s GP9s. We’re sure that the audience appreciates it as well. It’s nice to hear from someone who has hands-on experience with those particular locomotives.
I grew up in Tucson in the late 90’s and for those first few post merger years everything still had an Espee feel with old dirty, smoky diesels and lots of foreign power until the big order of SD70’s arrived in 2000. Those first few shots in the yard really bring back memories of the days when my dad and I would explore the yard…we even got access to the catwalk above the fueling pad! This free access changed post 9/11 of course. This video really made me nostalgic for those hot, sundrenched days railfanning the Sunset route
We’re happy that this video brought you back to those happy times. And you’re absolutely right, “railroad access” for railfans started to become more difficult beginning in the early 2000s. We do miss the good old days! Regarding the motive power situation on the Union Pacific following the SP merger, that record-breaking order for 1000 SD70Ms allowed the UP to regain traffic that had previously been lost, and to rebuild its reputation as a solid performer in the railroad industry. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment.
Amtrak wishes they had so many riders outside New York.
Those Mexican passenger trains were quite popular! It’s just too bad they didn’t generate enough revenue to justify their operation. Thank you for watching the video.
Crazy to see how much the track layout in Berea has changed. Great video!
Thank you, John! And yes, there have been many changes over the past 20-25 years in Berea. Pretty neat stuff. We appreciate the comment.
there plans for Herber Valley to reconnect with the UP so they aren’t land locked anymore?
Hi, Andrew. We do not know of any plans to reconnect the line to the outside world. Although, it would be awesome if they did! Thanks for watching.
@@CVisionProductions1 thanks. would be a hellva lot easier for when they get new equipment in imo
You’re welcome. And yes, you’re absolutely right.
I’m glad 52 and 77 are still in there heritage colors! I remember me and my dad seeing them on the Guilford Rail System/Pan Am!
Well, they wore those heritage schemes when this footage was captured in June of 2020. They looked great! Thank you for watching the video.
@@CVisionProductions1 You make great content! Keep up the great work!
We’ll try our best. Thank you!!!
As of 2024 (last i checked) 52, Originally B&M 1726, has been repainted into Heber Valley's Rio Grande Scheme and now is 5926, the 59 being D&RGW Designation for GP9s and the 26 is from the Original Number, 77 has Similar Plans and will become 5938, HVRR also has a UP GP9 that will soon get Repainted dont know to what tho, and a VIA FP9, all Running I believe
@dr.myater Thank you for the detailed information. It is very much appreciated.
Utah railway 6061 is the only one left to not get repainted to the genesee and wyoming paint
Thank you for the update! They looked great as a matched pair. It’s unfortunate that can no longer happen. We appreciate you watching and commenting.
Pretty little railway line , good video !
Thank you!!! And yes, the Heber Valley operates through some spectacular country! It really shows off the scenic splendor of Utah.
That was really a fun ride. Virtually speaking of course.
Thank you, Kevin! We enjoyed it as well. The Heber Valley Railroad is a class act. We highly recommend them as a vacation destination.
Yeah Ive Notice that The C40-8W was pulling a Chicago and Northwestern Locomotive and notching up Engine around the curve by the Buffalo line but i like the first scene when the Conrail C30-7 came by passing by Berea tower and Honking once in the beginning plus Guilford Railroad came along for ride and a GP38-2 with 1 Engine pulling Gongelas towards the Pittsburgh line and off in the distance the crossing gates go down
Sweet! We’re glad that you enjoyed the video.
Another awesome video. Definitely the two GP9s are away from their homes on the east coast. Hopefully soon we can see UP 618 and GWR 75 back in operation soon.
Thank you, Ben! And yes, it would be awesome to see more of the Heber Valley’s equipment in service. We appreciate the comment.
Thanks for another great video especially highlighting both the B & M and MEC, brings back childhood memories seeing those units👍👍
